"Lawn & Garden Question & Answers"

Senior Extension Educator, MSUE 1994 – present:
In this position I do field oriented, applied research on Michigan vegetable crops, primarily, slicing cucumbers, peppers, tomatoes, zucchini, yellow squash but I have worked with several vegetable crop species.  I initiated and operate the Southwest Michigan Irrigation Network (SWMIN).  SWMIN is a pay for service soil moisture monitoring program that provides participants with weekly readings and advice on irrigation application.  I also am responsible for developing and promoting educational opportunities for vegetable producers and helping solve production problems through on-site visits, phone calls and emails.  I also work closely with the Michigan Agricultural Tourism Association (MATA) for developing tours and educational opportunities.

 Orchard Manager, Hurd Orchards, Holley, NY 1991 – 1994:
Managed all orchard activities with the production of strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, apples, sweet cherries, tart cherries, peaches, plums and other minor fruit crops.  Also assisted in marketing through an on-site market and farmer's markets.  Also helped in processing of some products through the on-site kitchen.


Assistant Professor, Horticulture Department, North Carolina State University 1983 - 1991
In charge of the genetic improvement of strawberries and grapes for all geographic regions of North Carolina.  Activities included active field and laboratory approaches.  I also taught the Small Fruit Production course and a graduate level plant breeding course.
